Same flight, same day, two very different experiences and one uncomfortable conversation with a gate agent.

Is The Upgrade Actually Worth It? I Bought Both Seats To Find Out.

I have spent a stupid amount of money on airline seats over the years, mostly on the theory that more legroom equals a better human being.

This time I actually ran the numbers.

The upgrade cost $89 on a two hour flight. That is roughly $44 an hour to not have someone recline into my kneecaps. On a red eye? Absolutely. On a Tuesday morning hop where I am going to be awake and annoyed regardless? Probably not.

The real answer is boring: buy the upgrade when the flight is long, the middle seat is sold, or you have to work when you land.

Otherwise, sit in the back and spend the $89 on dinner.

Probably food. Maybe a building. Possibly something stupid.
